Do I have access to research tools over the summer?

Answer

Summer Student and Graduate Access

Lexis

Enrolled students have full access to their Lexis student account this summer. Students are encouraged to leverage these tools during their summer jobs as many organizations where students will be working do not have the breadth of tools and content that are included in students’ Lexis accounts.

Spring graduates have extended Lexis+  access (for free/no time limits per week/same content) via their law school IDs through December of their graduating year. No need to enroll or register, the extended access occurs automatically. Graduates can also choose from one of four additional Lexis tools as a graduate gift. Spring graduates have until June to redeem their LexisNexis Rewards points.

Westlaw

You can use Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw® Precision and Practical Law, over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client. Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include the following:

  • Summer coursework
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law Review or Journal research
  • Moot Court research
  • Non-Profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship sponsored by the school

You do not have to do anything to gain access to these tools over the summer. If you have any questions, please contact your Thomson Reuters Academic Account Manager.

You have access to Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, for six-months after graduation. Your “Grad Elite” access gives you 60-hours of usage on these products per month to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills. While you cannot use it in situations where you are billing a client, Thomson Reuters encourages you to use these tools to build your knowledge of the law and prepare for your bar exam.

In addition, you get access to job searching databases on Westlaw and TWEN for 18-months after graduation for 1-hour a month.
